SONiA & disappear fear
with guest artist NAMOLI BRENNET
SONiA's duel career — half groundbreaking singer-songwriter, half
brave political activist — reaches new heights on the new CD, Tango.
Comprising a dozen songs recorded in Spanish, Hebrew, Arabic and English,
the album not only reverberates with a unique kind of Middle Eastern-Latin
pop. It also constitutes SONiA’s strongest depiction to date of what it
would mean to live life in a world without fear. (More info about SONiA
here.)
Opening | SONiA's Fri concert will feature guest artist Namoli Brennet.
What kind of a name is Namoli? An idiosyncratic one for sure. Perhaps it's
better to call it a queer one. And like most good, queer names, Namoli
Brennet came up with it almost by accident. "Someone asked me, 'How do you
describe yourself?'" recalls Brennet, "And I said, 'I don't really know —
I guess I see myself as an anomaly.'" A few spelling twists later, Namoli
was born.
Brennet is an anomaly in more than just her name, however;
she's "gender variant." She finds the term more appropriate
for her than merely transgender (though she uses that one, as well).
Primarily, though, she's a folk-oriented singer-songwriter, one who
refuses to shun pop or electronic instruments, or to stick to one genre.
And it's her music that's getting her noticed. Performing Songwriter
says "Brennet sings and plays with an intensity
and intelligence that can't be ignored."
