CSPS debut | American Indie says “Pezzettino’s
Margaret Stutt is a force of nature. Her music is ethereal and haunting,
bringing a fantastically different, textural sound to what is decidedly not
what you would expect to hear coming out of an accordion.”
That’s right, an accordion. The Milwaukee, Wisconsin-based artist takes the
instrument beyond Myron Floren as far as anyone since Pauline Oliveros ...
or Weird Al.
Influenced and compared to the likes of Amanda Palmer, Bjork, Sufjan Stevens
and Andrew Bird, Pezzettino was trained in classical piano at a local
convent until the age of 12. She started playing accordion in 2008.
“I picked up the accordion for the first time, and all of a sudden, songs
started pouring out of me,” she says. “It’s as if the instrument unlocked my
voice. With each song that gushed out, I felt more free, as if I had been
holding my breath for a really long time.”
Since the release of her debut album Because I Have No Control last
year, she’s been touring the U.S. and gaining a reputation for her
genre-bending style. LION was released this spring on Night Owl Records and
features a full band.
Pezzettino is well known for her guerilla marketing efforts, from having
fans finance car repairs to bursting in on the Madison Onion offices for a
surprise concert. Most recently she gave supporters the chance to choose
which covers she performs for a special YouTube video series.
Any way you cut it, Pezzettino’s music is surprising. As she says of her own
music, “It’s like unapologetically showing up for a date after jumping from
a moving car, with skinned knees and messy hair.”
