MARK
OLSON
Cedar Rapids debut | Mark Olson was a
founding member of The Jayhawks, the most acclaimed band to emerge out of
the alt-country scene. He left the Jayhawks in 1996, after the release of
the band’s biggest-selling album, Tomorrow The Green Grass, but
continued to record music with his new band, The Creekdippers, working out
of his new
home in the California desert.
The past two years, Mark Olson has been doing one thing
—
traveling the world. And, incidentally,
coming to grips with some of the most painful moments of his life, including
a divorce that resulted in the loss of the home he'd built in California.
Such life-altering events inspired him to dig somehow deeper, writing the
kind of album that makes adjectives like introspective seem tired and
utterly useless.
The result of those efforts was Mark Olson's first true solo album, The Salvation Blues, produced
by Ben Vaughn. A deeply personal project, the CD finds Mark’s poetic lyrics
and inimitable, salt-of-the-earth warble complemented by Vaughn’s gorgeous musical backdrops,
as well as the
work of some of LA’s best studio musicians. The album also features a
long-awaited reunion with Olson's former Jayhawks bandmate and writing partner,
Gary Louris, on three of the songs.
