GIVEWAY
Iowa debut | In Scotland the term Giveway loosely translates as “watch out, someone's coming through," and
that's just what audiences are doing when it comes to this outfit. This four
sisters who make up the band have been at it since the ages of four, five
and six, which helps to explain how they became so good at what they do.
With Fiona Johnson on fiddle, guitar, piano, whistle and vocas; Kirsty on
piano, accordion and vocals; Amy on drums and accordion; and Mairi on
piano and keyboard, bass, and vocals, GiveWay is capable of turning heads
not only with their looks and skill, but for the remarkable depth they bring
to the material they play.
Mixing Scottish traditional and folk music, with energetic lively jigs, jazz
inflections, and modern songs that echo ancient haunting airs, GiveWay's on
the forefront of a new brand of music from Scotland.
Having recently received the BBC Young Folk Award, and having performed to
capacity crowds at the Cambridge Folk Festival, GiveWay is very much a band
on the the move. Phil Cunningham of Silly Wizard has produced both of the
band's two CDs, including the recent Inspired on Greentrax Records.
And critics are certainly taking notice. The reviewer for Folk and Roots
magazine writes "“I defy anyone not to be enthralled by this group ...
this is joyous music, this is what music needs to be.” Says Living
Tradition, "It's sparkly, tight, exuberant and guaranteed to raise a
smile
—
even if it's a rueful smile, when you realize
you can't play that well yourself."
