SUMAN
SHARMA and ANUP GHOSH
Cedar Rapids debut | Sitar player
Suman Sharma began studying the instrument at age ten; soon after she
was appearing in music festivals and winning awards. She went on to study
classical sitar and vocal music as a graduate student at the University of
Delhi, where she came into contact with renowned sitar maestro Pandit Debu
Chaudhuri, and established a musical career in India.
Since moving to the Washington, DC, area, she has performed and lectured
throughout the US, including the prestigious Kennedy Center. Her playing
style, effortless and technically impressive, is deeply rooted in the
tradition of Indian classical music. She has released a number of albums,
including Melody of Joy and Monsoon, that feature her
performing both solo and in the company of other musicians. She is also very
active as a teacher and writer, promoting the musical traditions of India
and making them accessible to individuals trained in Western music.
Like Dr. Sharma, Anup Ghosh
came from an artistic family and began learning music while
still a child. In the 1970s he studied with several of India's leading tabla players,
including Sri Radhakanta Nandy of West Bengal and Pandit Shyamal Bose of
Farukkhabad Gharana. In 1981 he was awarded the prestigious National
Scholarship in Music. Since then he has performed on radio, television, and
at many of the leading festivals and musical venues in India, including the
homes of both the president and prime minister. He also performed for President
Bill Clinton when he visited India.
Today he holds the distinction of having
performed in more than sixty countries, in the process becoming one of the
best known tabla teachers in the world.
