BUILLE
CSPS debut | It’s rare that instruments are reinvented by
individual musicians, but Buille's Niall Vallely has done just that with
the concertina. As Irish Music Magazine
describes it, “This man can do pyrotechnics with his eyes shut. He kicks
off with one of his trademark finger-blistering reels, shaking that
hexagonal magic box like it was a Bond martini.”
Add to Niall’s virtuosic playing, his brother Caoimhín on piano, and
powerhouse Paul Meehan on guitar and bouzouki, and you have one of the
most potent sounds to emerge from Ireland in years. In the words of The
Irish Times, Buille is “as fresh a breath that’s blown through traditional and
roots circles in a long, long time.”
Based in traditional Celtic, Buille (pronounced bwee-luh, meaning “beat”
in Irish) creates a contemporary, bright and swinging sound incorporating
jazz, blues and classical, with almost all the tunes written by Niall. The
trio’s debut album, Buille, was released in 2005 to rave reviews and was
called by Living Tradition “a classic of new Irish music.”
Buille now returns with the brand new Buille 2, of which The
Irish Times says: “...another spine-tingling collection that bursts
with originality ... a thoroughly challenging collection that will
stimulate brainwaves and pelvic girdles in equal measure.”
Buille’s roots run deep through the traditional Irish music scene. Niall
Vallely began learning the concertina at the age of 7, taught by his
parents, founders of the Armagh Pipers Club. A founding member of Nomos,
he has performed with musicians such as Karan Casey, Tim O’Brien, Mícheál
Ó Súilleabháin and Paddy Keenan.
Like his older brother, pianist Caoimhín grew up in Armagh and began tin
whistle lessons at the Armagh Pipers Club before moving to the fiddle.
While still 17, he joined the band Upstairs in a Tent, where he played
alongside Brian Finnegan (formerly of the band Flook) and Kathryn Tickell.
A product of thriving Irish music scenes in Manchester, County Armagh and
Cork, Paul Meehan recorded three albums with the highly acclaimed North
Cregg. He has also spent a number of years touring and recording with
Dorsa, the Karan Casey Band and Lúnasa.
