CSPS from Third St CSPS
1103 Third Street SE, Cedar Rapids

C.S.P.S. Hall, built in 1891, functioned as a Czechoslovakian social hall (the initials originally stood for Czech and Slovak Prudential Society) into the 1960s. Since 1992, the renovated, century-old building, listed on the National Register of Historic Places, has served as a community-based center for contemporary art, as well as the headquarters of Legion Arts. Comprising some 24,000 square feet on the upper two stories, CSPS features two large galleries, a 150-seat theatre, meeting rooms and studio space, in addition to the offices of Legion Arts, the Drawing Legion, and Tractor magazine. Although there is no elevator, a chair lift is available at the main entrance for those individuals who require it. Click here for directions and a map, here for a list of nearby restaurants.

Osada Apartment Complex Osada
905 Third Street SE, Cedar Rapids

Located two blocks north of CSPS, Osada was an abandoned grocery warehouse until 1996, when it was acquired by the nonprofit MidAmerica Housing Partnership and converted into 67 apartments for low- and middle-income residents. Legion Arts worked alongside MAHP throughout the conversion process, and the building's living units are uniquely suited to artists. Currently 10 to 15 percent of the units are occupied by artists, who must meet income guidelines to be eligible for residency. Osada also contains the Atrium Gallery, and is the frequent site of arts events co-organized by Legion Arts.

Residents must meet income guidelines. To enquire about eligibility and available apartments, call MAHP at 319-365-6247

Paul Engle Center Paul Engle Center
1600 Fourth Avenue SE, Cedar Rapids

Located in a renovated corner grocery, the Paul Engle Center reflects a partnership between Legion Arts, MidAmerica Housing Partnership, and the Wellington Heights Neighborhood Association. The project  honors the life and spirit of Paul Engle (1908-91), a writer who grew up in Wellington Heights area and went on to achieve international recognition in the arts. Founder of the renowned International Writing Program at the University of Iowa, Engle symbolizes the ability of the arts to provide a meeting place for people from different nations, races and cultural backgrounds The former grocery store -- where a young Paul Engle once worked selling ice cream -- houses flexible gallery and meeting space on the first floor and living accommodations on the second. In addition to serving the neighborhood, the Paul Engle Center functions as a clearing house for community arts activities taking place throughout the city.

For a modest rental fee, the Paul Engle Center can host your next community event. Call 319-366-1836.
