Southern Avenue

  • Sat Dec 9 2017 - 8:00 pm • CSPS Hall
  • $16 advance | $19 door

The band took its name from the original Memphis address of Stax Records, and that tells you much of what you need to know about Southern Avenue. This young Memphis group is well on its way to taking its deft blend of R&B and Southern-fried blues to the rest of the world. Led by sisters Tierinii (vocals) and Tikyra Jackson (drums), the quintet includes Israeli powerhouse guitarist Ori Naftaly, jazz bassist Daniel McKee, and keyboardist Jeremy Powell: a young but savvy line-up able to conjure a spiritual vibe thanks to its soulful vocals and gritty guitars. Evoking comparisons to a young Tina Turner, the Staple Singers and The Black Keys, the ensemble is rapidly winning over critics and fans alike. Relix calls them “a deeply soulful blues band that’s turning the scene on its head … fiery guitar-led soul rock, with punchy horns, hard-shuffling beats, sparkling ballads and barroom throwdowns.” Goldmine calls the outfit “an exquisitely talented act … rocking their originals into a frothy Memphis soul stew fit to twitch your body to in ways you didn’t think you could. That’s how good they are.”
