Representing five generations of North American music, the Ronstadt Brothers hail from one of Arizona’s best-known musical families. Founded by Michael J. Ronstadt, younger brother of pop singer Linda, the award-winning ensemble is today carried on by his sons (and her nephews), Michael G. and Petie. Multi-instrumentalists and solo performers in their own right, they’ve assembled an exciting repertoire that preserves the traditional Southwestern and Mexican songs of their heritage, while adding innovative original material. Rich harmonies sung in English and Spanish are accompanied by outstanding cello and multiple guitars. The new compositions place them on the cutting edge of the genre, stretching the boundaries of folk, blues and jazz. While some songs exemplify the band’s long-established roots in the Southwest, others blossom into an alternative vibe, incorporating a dark, jazzy strut here, a western flare there, all inundated by Alex Flores’s sweet sax. Members of the quintet have toured and recorded with such diverse artists as Los Lobos, Dixie Hummingbirds, David Bromberg, Tish Hinojosa, Big Bad Voodoo Daddy, Mariachi Vargas and, of course, Linda Ronstadt. The group’s latest release, In the Land of the Setting Sun, was ranked one of the Top 15 Albums of the Year by the influential journal Popmatters.
