Saturday October 21, 4 pm
Saturday October 21, 8 pm

Years in the making, Legion Arts is proud to present the world premiere of Pang!, a groundbreaking theatre work about what it’s like to be poor in Cedar Rapids, Miami and Los Angeles. Written and directed by award-winning performance artist Dan Froot, the script is based on interviews conducted with a single low-income family, in each of the three cities, over the past two years. The three one-acts are staged as if the audience is watching a radio theatre company perform a live broadcast. In Cedar Rapids, a family makes a harrowing escape from war-torn Burundi and resettles in the Midwest, with unexpected consequences. In Los Angeles, a single mom and her nine children are swindled into foreclosure on their home. And in Miami, a seven-year-old boy sews seeds of hope as he fantasizes his family’s way out of a neighborhood besieged by violence and beset by racism.

Commissioned by an innovative theater center in each of the three cities, with additional support from the National Performance Network, Pang! features a cast of Los Angeles actors and live music by acclaimed composer and performer Robert Een. Says The New York Times, “Froot is an evocative storyteller with a crazy, irrepressible imagination and the simplest and most unassuming of performance styles. Full-throttle laughter turns to dazed silence as Froot spins his audience with him into a dark vacuum. It is quite an achievement.”
