A unique and dazzlingly talented international trio, The Nordic Fiddlers Bloc has, in six short years, become something of an international phenomenon. On their own, Olav Luksengård Mjelva (from Norway), Anders Hall (from Sweden), and Kevin Henderson (from Shetland Islands), are master musicians, each recognized as an outstanding exponent of his particular tradition. Teamed up, they’re taking the fiddle world by storm. Says the music magazine LIRA, “the worn concept of ‘tradition and innovation’ has rarely been used as smartly as this.”
With a firm focus on, and deep knowledge of, the rich traditions of fiddle music, the trio has developed a unique sound that’s been called intense, invigorating, gripping Their clever use of harmony, rhythm, riffs and bass creates a sound that leaves the listener enthralled ― and at the same time wondering how that much sound could come from only three instruments. “Seldom before have three fiddlers sounded so well matched,” says The Herald. “Seldom before have three fiddles sounded so much like four or five, without using electronic trickery.”
To date their music has taken them across the UK, Ireland and Europe, as well as Canada and the US, captivating audiences at each stop.
Following up on their eponymously entitled, and critically acclaimed, debut album of 2011, the band last year released Deliverance, their second CD. Reaction was swift. Gushed Folkworld, “On the evidence at hand, pure fiddle doesn’t get much better than this.”
