A founding member of both The Jayhawks and The Original Harmony Ridge Creek Dippers, Mark Olson’s status an Americana pioneer was always assured. Regardless, Olson’s musical explorations have continued. Following his break from the Creek Dippers, and from Victoria Williams, his restless career saw the release of two solo albums, 2007’s The Salvation Blues and, a year later, Ready for the Flood. In 2010 he reunited with former Jayhawks collaborator Gary Louris to release Many Colored Kite. After this one-off reunion, Olson met his future wife, Norwegian musician Ingunn Ringvold, and turned his attention to making music as a twosome. They recorded Good-bye Lizelle in 2014, and this year released, on Glitterhouse Records, Spokeswoman of the Bright Sun. Writes Olson, “This is music that will speak to you about things that have happened! An album that sounds like you are alone in the desert all by yourself. Remembering childhood experiences, musical instruments and all the joy that took place. Things we have forgotten because of terrible things that have happened.” In their review of the album, No Depression praised “Olson’s wistful vocals, gentle harmonies and wide-eyed outlook, conveying a paisley pop sound that’s somehow both whimsical and reflective. The songs bring to mind Incredible String Band , in their lilting gait and angular execution … this Spokeswoman has substance to share.”
