Karla Bonoff

  • Tue Apr 3 2018 - 7:00 pm • CSPS Hall
  • $25 advance | $30 door

Her songs have been covered by the likes of Linda Ronstadt, Bonnie Raitt and Aaron Neville, but no one else sings them like Karla. “I can’t tell you what it is, exactly,” fellow singer songwriter Catie Curtis has said. “I can only say that when I hear her aching and unadorned voice, I slump in my chair in a deeply satisfied, melancholy way. Bonnie Raitt nailed it when she said, ‘Karla breaks my heart every time she sings.’” Karla originally emerged from the Monday night hootenanny scene at the Troubadour nightclub in West Hollywood. She formed the proto-folk/rock group Bryndle with Wendy Waldman, Andrew Gold and Kenny Edwards, which signed to A&M and cut a record that was never released. Gold and Edwards went on to be part of Linda Ronstadt’s backing band and brought some of Karla’s original songs to Linda’s attention. Ronstadt recorded three of those songs on her 1976 album, Hasten Down the Wind, leading to a recording contract for Bonoff and the release of three albums on Columbia Records, the last of which, Wild Heart of the Young (1982), featured the Top 40 hit “Personally.” Bonoff also worked on movie soundtracks during the ’80s, notably on Footloose (1984) and About Last Night (1986).
