John McCutcheon is folk music’s Renaissance man: a master instrumentalist, powerful singer-songwriter, storyteller, activist and author. His 30 recordings have garnered every honor imaginable, including seven Grammy nominations. He is a master of a dozen traditional instruments, including hammer dulcimer, guitar, banjo, autoharp, mountain dulcimer, fiddle and Jew’s harp. “The most impressive instrumentalist I’ve ever heard,” he was called by none other than Johnny Cash. Moreover, his work with many of the legendary figures of Appalachian music resulted in a love of not only home-made music, but of community and rootedness. His commitment to grassroots political organizations has put him on the frontlines of issues important to working people, and the songs he sings, whether traditional or original, are political, socially conscious, and inevitably moving. This is music with a profound sense of place, family and strength. Says the Washington Post, “He has an uncanny ability to breathe new life into the familiar … his storytelling has the richness of fine literature.”
