Fourth Room Theatre presents John Logan’s Tony award-winning drama about the legendary painter Mark Rothko.
Red is the startling portrait of the famous abstract expressionist painter, Mark Rothko’s two-year struggle to complete the most high-priced commission in the history of modern art, and his charged relationship with young assistant, Ken, who challenges both him and the course of art history. Set in the rapidly-shifting cultural current of early 1960s New York, Red is the provocative depiction of a luminary artist at the height of his powers.
Variety called Red “majestic” and Ben Brantley of The New York Times wrote, “As much as any stage work I can think of, Red captures the dynamic relationship between an artist and his creations.”
UNI acting professor Richard Glockner portrays Rothko and Matthew James is Ken. Angie Toomsen directs, with stage design by Scott Olinger.
Red is presented by Fourth Room Theatre in collaboration with the University of Northern Iowa Art Department, Theater UNI and the Waterloo Center for the Arts.
The show will run about 90 minutes without an intermission.
