Dervish has been bringing traditional Irish music to the world for more than 25 years. Described by the BBC as “an icon of Irish music,” the band has played at festivals ranging from Glastonbury to Rock in Rio, where they performed for a quarter of a million people. They’ve toured with the president of Ireland and struck up tunes on the Great Wall of China. Along the way they became recognized as one of the biggest names in the Irish music, ever. Their studio and live albums ― 12 to date ― make up one of the outstanding catalogues in the genre. Their live performances are renowned for matching dazzling tunes with stunning interpretations of traditional songs. They regularly travel across Europe and the US, and have also toured in Asia, South America and Australia. And over the years they’ve shared the stage with artists ranging from James Brown and Neil Young, to Sting and Iron Maiden.

Fronted by one of the country’s best-known singers, Cathy Jordan, Dervish boasts a line-up that includes some of Ireland’s finest traditional musicians. All six are steeped in the musical traditions of Counties Sligo and Leitrim in north-west Ireland ― the same landscape that inspired W.B. Yeats and countless other artists. Members of Dervish include Shane Mitchell (accordion), Liam Kelly (flute/whistle), Brian McDonagh (mandola/mandolin) Michael Holmes (bouzouki), Cathy Jordan (not only a singer but also a mean bodhran player), and the newest member ― he joined in 1998 ― Tom Morrow (fiddle). Recently signed to the legendary Rounder label, the band promises to continue to build on the roots of Irish music. The benefits are obvious. As The Guardian newspaper explains it, “Dervish are simply brilliant: they carry Irish history with them.”
