David Bromberg Quintet

  • Fri Jun 1 2018 - 8:00 pm • CSPS Hall
  • $27 advance | $32 door

We’re thrilled to present, in his CSPS debut, the great singer-songwriter David Bromberg: godfather of Americana, decorated multi-instrumentalist, gifted song interpreter, and bandmate to the likes of Bob Dylan, George Harrison and Jerry Garcia. Since releasing his self-titled debut in 1971, Bromberg has carved out one of the most distinguished careers in contemporary music. He received early acclaim for his songwriting and distinctive performing style. After several decades of steady touring and recording, he entered a twenty-year period of self-imposed exile from the stage, during which he became both a renowned violin expert, as well as the official cultural ambassador of Wilmington, Delaware. Recent years have seen Bromberg enjoying a triumphant return to music-making, capping an amazing tale that leads back to one place: the blues.

His latest album is 2017’s The Blues, The Whole Blues and Nothing But The Blues, on Red House Records. Produced by Levon Helm and Larry Campbell, it’s a wonderfully curated selection of deep cuts from the genre, reaching electrifying heights as well as intimate acoustic moments, all the while breathing fresh life into the songs of Robert Johnson, Bobby Charles, George “Little Hat” Jones, Ray Charles, Sonny Boy Williamson and others. Bromberg has said the album was inspired by a remark made by Willie Nelson, who claims he heard it from Texas fiddler Johnny Gimble: “There’s only two kinds of music: the Star Spangled Banner, and the blues.” It’s an appropriate and hardly surprising move for a man who’s been called “an American music icon” by no less than Dr. John, and who counts among his friends and collaborators Ringo Starr, Emmylou Harris, Bonnie Raitt, Carly Simon, The Eagles and, reaching even further back, the Rev. Gary Davis.
