Legion Arts is known for
its commitment to artistic innovation, cultural diversity and community
development.
Legion Arts is a
multidisciplinary presenter. Although art, music and
theatre are the best-known aspects of our program, we're adept at presenting
everything from literature, to performance art, to film and video, dance, puppetry and even juggling.
And our commitment to
diversity isn't only formal. After ten seasons, CSPS is widely acknowledged as Iowa's
leading presenter of work by women, gay and lesbian artists; young people; Black, Asian
and Latino artists; and individuals with disabilities.
In addition, Legion Arts regularly cooperates with local organizations, setting up workshops, educational activities, and other
community events. Our partners include Foundation 2, Rapids AIDS Project, Metro High
School and MidAmerica Housing Partnership. In the early 90s, Legion Arts was
instrumental in starting the Cedar Rapids Area Cultural Alliance. More recently, we worked
with MAHP and the Wellington Heights Neighborhood Association to open the Paul Engle
Center for Neighborhood Arts.
As a result of its innovative work, Legion Arts
was featured last year in a segment of Restore America, a national television series
focused on community development and historic preservation.
